About the Jewish Communal Professional

There is a special place in the Jewish community, where reward is not based solely on money. It is an occupation that enables an individual to be rewarded for creating an environment that ensures the future survival of the Jewish community; one that builds tikkun olam and upholds the social values of our community. The Jewish communal worker is the skeletal structure that enables and carries out vision in our community.

Traditionally in the Jewish Community, scholars and communal workers are viewed with the highest regard. Maimonides sees the role of communal professional as one that is inspired. In comparing the communal worker to the Priests and Levites, Maimonides writes that because of their elevated calling, the communal worker should be valued and remunerated for their devotion (Mishnah Torah 13:13) Furthermore, in Brachot 5:1:8d, the Talmud states that "Rabbi Jeremiah said: He who occupies himself with affairs of the community is as one who studies the Law".

Clearly our sages viewed the Jewish communal worker as someone who is dedicated, devoted, and inspired. It takes a talented individual to succeed in the Jewish communal profession.

Fortunately, for our generation, there are many options and opportunities for anyone who is excited and enthusiastic about joining this unique profession. All across the United States there are academic programs aimed at training and guiding the future communal worker. Each program offers a unique learning opportunity. I encourage anyone who ever wanted to make a difference to contact all of the programs and research which one can best help you realize your vision and dream. Your talent and skill is needed to maintain a strong foundation in the Jewish Community.
